Golf is a timeless sport with a long history of great athletes and a game filled with tradition. The game is very technical. The slightest changes in technique can throw off a swing completely.

The fact that golf is such a technical sport means that most anyone can become good at it with enough hard work, practice, and the right sports training equipment, like a putting mat or golf swing plane trainer. Here are a few practice tips for those amateur golfers out there.

Gripping the Club

Finding the right grip that works for you is essential to the game. Generally, most beginners start with a regular grip, which resembles the grip for holing a baseball bat. This is a fine default as it supports those with weaker arm and wrist strength. However, this grip can often lead to your hands not working properly in synch.

Advancing from the baseball grip is the overlapping grip. In this grip, the little finger of your right hand sits on top of the index finger in your left hand. This grip gives you more accuracy and control and is often preferred by male golfers as it requires arm and wrist strength.

The interlocking grip is the best option for most people. The little finger of your right hand and the index finger of your left hand interlock. The interlocking grip allows you to create proper leverage, giving you maximum power in your swing.

Holding Your Stance

Your stance is as important as your grip. Your stance should ideally aim to balance your weight equally. Tension will affect your golf swing, so try to stay as relaxed as possible. Bend at the hips and the knees and keep your back straight.

The Swing

Dozens of minute things can affect your swing, and everyone’s swing is different. Here are a few quick tips.

  • Remember to keep your head down and eyes on the ball, until your follow through.
  • Try not to use your right hand to force any power. The power in your swing will come from leverage in the angle between your club and wrists. Attempting to add extra power with arm strength will skew the ball.
  • Furthermore, don’t rush your downswing. Increase speed gradually and ensure good balance.
  • Aim for a controlled swing. You may want to consider buying a swing plane trainer, which can help you achieve an even, smooth swing.

Above all, remember to practice hard and keep your mind at ease.
