3 Steps to Summer Smooth Skin

Your skin has been hibernating all winter long, and though you may be ready to step into the sun, there’s a high likelihood that your legs really aren’t! Prep yourself for the season of shorts and skirts with our three simple steps to smooth summer skin – all you’ll need to add are a pair of devastatingly sexy sunglasses and a fruity drink and you’re good to go…

Step One: Exfoliation

The very first thing you should do when trying to achieve summer smooth skin is to create a blank canvas. That is, you need to eradicate all of those dead skin cells that have accumulated during the winter months and get rid of any rough patches. The best way to do this is with an exfoliating scrub, ideally one made from sugar or salt. Sugar and salt are ideal natural exfoliators as they provide gentle yet effective abrasive action, and won’t irritate sensitive skin. They are also a great green choice as such products are usually naturally biodegradable.

When exfoliating, start at the feet and work your way upwards. Remember to work the scrub in circular motions towards the heart, as this boosts circulation and really makes the skin glow. For a more intensive exfoliation, work the scrub in lightly to dry skin before getting in the shower. This works best for elbows, knees and feet – be very gentle if attempting this for the whole body.

Step Two: Cleansing

Now that your body has been refined and smoothed, it’s time to put some goodness back in. To make skin super soft, shower oil is ideal. Not only will it infuse skin with essential hydration, but it will also coat skin with emollient protection long after you leave the bathroom.

If you find an oil to be too heavy for your skin, consider using a nourishing cream wash.  Products that have natural extracts are particularly good for infusing vital nutrients into the skin and work to increase hydration levels for a more even tone. Sometimes exfoliation can be tough on skin, so you need to treat it well and restore the balance.

Step Three: Moisturisation

The final step for smooth skin is an absolute essential. A good moisturiser might not be easy to find but when you do it can really transform your skin. The type of formulation you choose is entirely dependent upon your skin type. For example, if your skin just needs a little moisture, quenching body milk will do the job. If your skin is very dry, body butter will envelop the skin in lasting moisture, alleviate dryness, and leave behind a protective film. Ingredients to look out for are shea butter, cocoa butter and jojoba oil, which are very deeply nourishing.

Once all three steps are complete, you’ll be left with soft, smooth, supple and toned skin that looks and feels great. All that’s left is for the sun to come out!
