In my family there have been several women who have suffered from infertility. One of those women was my grandmother. She tried to have a child for many years, into her forties, and could not seem to get pregnant. This was before the era of fertility treatments and so on, so you can only imagine how depressed she was. Finally she decided that she was going to have a child one way or another and she and her husband adopted a little boy. Just a month or two later she became pregnant with a little girl.
My spouse is also the child of a mother that struggled with infertility. For many years she tried to have a child and underwent several procedures. Finally she was in the process of adopting a child when she found out she was pregnant at last. The adoption still continued for doctors feared she would lose the baby. Happily she did not and gave birth to a healthy child.
Even I have a role to play when it comes to infertility. My mother was diagnosed with problems with her ovaries at a young age and had to have one removed. She was told by doctors that she would have a lot of trouble conceiving a child. One day she felt very ill and went to the doctor to find out why. It turns out that she was not feeling well because she was pregnant with me. After several years of being a single mother she remarried. After a year of marriage she gave birth to my brother. So you see that even with her missing ovary she still had children.
The point of these stories is to remind you that infertility is not the end of your story. There are many ways to be a parent even if you cannot be one biologically. Today there are many more treatments and options available to you that can help you have a child of your own, but if you truly want a child to love there are other options also. Adoption, foster care and surrogacy are just some of the ways that you can have a child.
Do not let infertility cause you to become so depressed that you miss out on other opportunities. You can still have a great impact on the life of a child even if you cannot have one yourself. When you keep your mind focused on your goal and not your struggle then you can see the big picture and keep from being overwhelmed and defeated by sadness.
Remember that many people have had difficulties with infertility. Do not let it become a stumbling block in your life. Instead make the choice to stay positive and thankful for the good things in your life.
