The Best Ways to Keep Your Mind Active and Improve Your Mental Wellbeing

As we get older, we might find that we have ‘senior’ moments more often than not. We might go upstairs to get something but completely forget why we went up there in the first place. We might go to the fridge with something in mind and pick up the completely wrong thing. We can get these memory lapses at any point in our life. Particularly when we age, though. There are plenty of things that you can do to help prevent the decline in your memory or brain function. There are a few basic things that you can do every day that will keep your brain active. Then you can hopefully, see the decline in these ‘senior moments.’ Whatever age you are.

Keep Learning

The more you keep your mind ticking, the more likely that you won’t suffer from cognitive issues. Even if it isn’t formal education, make sure you keep yourself up to date with things. You could study a language, current affairs or do further reading on things like politics, for example. When you don’t have a job to keep your mind active, you will need to look for alternatives. So learning a new skill or developing a hobby can help a lot. You could even volunteer somewhere. Doing something a little different from the norm will help your mind to stay active.

Use Your Senses

If you use all of your senses, it will keep your brain on its toes, so to speak. It will help a lot with memory too. So when you make food, think about how it looks, as well as tastes, smells and feels. Then if will help you to remember that recipe for the future, for instance. Using all of your senses is important in new or unusual situations too. It will help your memory so much more.

Keep Active

If you are able to stay as active as you can, then it helps your physical wellbeing as well as your mental wellbeing. So taking part in a sport or activity that you enjoy will help massively. Being social when you are active is a good idea too. You might find that the easiest way to do that is to live in a retirement village. Then you can stay active with like-minded people around you. If you find yourself a little lonely, it won’t help you to be active or in turn; it won’t help your mental wellbeing. So keep active, especially with people around you.

Use Repetition

Have you ever been in a situation where you are introduced to someone, but you immediately forget their name? In can be so awkward to have to ask again. Which is why it is nice to be able to repeat their name after hearing it. You could introduce them to someone else, or ask them a question, using their name. When we repeat things, we are much less likely to forget those things. So use this in everyday life, as well as when meeting new people.
